About a month ago I became Sneaky AND Deceptive and my family loves it!
What am I talking about, well...
A few months ago, I purchased The Sneaky Chef and Deceptively Delicious cookbooks. I heard about sneaking fruits and vegetables into your kids meals and it peaked my interest. Thankfully, my son (3) has never really resisted vegetables, he likes broccoli because they are little trees, he eats carrots (as long is they can be dunked into something) and he loves salads! But I wanted more servings of vegetables in our meals, for the entire family. (There are only so many servings of raw veggies I can take in one day!)
So one Saturday afternoon, off to the grocery store I went. I bought fresh broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, carrots, baby spinach, zucchini, blueberries, prunes. I also bought wheat germ, oat bran, flax seed meal, tofu, you get the idea... I then came home and let the pureeing begin! The loud sound of the puree/food processor seemed to never end! But the end result looked so go! Little measured out healthy baggies of broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, the colors were brilliantly beautiful!
The next day, the deception began. My first sneaky recipe: scrambled eggs (hidden cauliflower), the result: the family had no clue and ate them all up!
Since then we have eaten hamburgers with spinach and broccoli hidden in the beef, mac & cheese with cauliflower, spaghetti and meatballs with 8 vegetables hidden, brownies with spinach and blueberries. I've learned how to make "cookies" for breakfast filled with chickpeas, whole wheat flour, flax seed meal and wheat germ! They are our favorite, especially to grab and go. I've happily served "ice-cream" for breakfast filled with blueberries, strawberries and yogurt.
The family loves it, and they now know the "secret" ingredients and even want to help with the pureeing. Its fun, its healthy, and maybe just a little sneaky.
